Song : Vellai Pookkal; Movie : Kannathil Muthamittaal (2002)

September 17, 2008

This song is one of my all time personal favs.Composed and rendered by A.R.Rahman, it has been beautifully picturised by director Mani Ratnam and cinematogrpaher Ravi.K.Chandran for the movie Kannthil Muthamittaal. The movie is considered to be one among the best works of Mani Ratnam and went on to win several awards at various film festivals and award ceremonies. Read more about the movie and the awards it won here.

The lyrics can be found here.

Trivia:
I have also sung the title song from this movie along with my good friend and V-Lokam regular Reeta. I am just waiting for an occasion to introduce her voice here.

To listen in a better way :

  • Please wait till the entire song streams.
  • Try using a headset/earphone for the overall sound clarity.

I wanted to add this song, ‘vellaippookkal’ in my post ‘best slow and melodius songs’, but couldn’t get/locate it. This song was recorded and not used for picturization. This is my favorite ARR song.

When Rahman was interviewed by Simi Garewal in her show, Rahman sang this song and said that this one is his favorite. The lyrics are superb, isn’t it?

    Thank you.

    • December 11, 2009 8:52 pm

Ya, it doesnt have a picturisation, if you had seen the movie, you would know na?. it comes in during the titles.

This is one of my most fav Rahman song too. A lill underrated though ! He plays this song in all his concerts with a special video; spellbinding video !

Btw, did you like the way I sang it by any chance ?

  30. August 25, 2010 11:30 am

Sorry, I forgot to reply here. Your singing is very good, Vimmuuu. Is it not ‘malargave’? Some words’ pronunciation can be improved like la ‘la’, pillai…please check it. Rahman also was having trouble while pronouncing vellai pookkal and pillai. He has improved now. I admire you a lot, vimmuuu. You are going to be recognised, if you try to come up in this music line.

    All the best.

    • August 25, 2010 5:17 pm

Ya, I realised that la too 😦 But now I feel its too late. or else I wouldve to resing the whole song again ! Is it that obvious ?

and yes, its malargave, but I thought ARR sings it as malarhave. ‘Ha’ and ‘ga’ gets interchanged in tamil at times, na? Like how they call Ragul for Rahul ! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Thanks a lot for the words Sandhya ! πŸ˜€

  31. August 25, 2010 8:00 pm

It is important that you notice the mistakes, you can correct them anytime.

Yes, many people do that mistake, not only ‘Ragul’ for ‘Rahul’…’yoha’ for ‘yoga’ (ulta!)! Tamil is a phunny language now! Everything is changing!
