The Much Awaited Soulmate.

August 4, 2009

This post is special in many ways. This is my first attempt at a short story in V-Lokam (and I hope it doesn’t end up being my last :D). This was also the first time I sent someone my post before publishing it here. The sweetheart that she is, not only read the stuff, but also came forward to edit it. She is none other than my arch rival Smita, the best book reviewer I have ever known !!! Thanks a lot Smita for all your help. (Btw, regarding that sweetheart and the best book reviewer part, she asked me to include those lines in return for her favour)

The Much Awaited Soulmate.

“Six more days to go, just six more days” yelled Prem to his fiancée, Meenaxi, on the phone. She giggled and said would call him later. Prem has never been this excited in his life before. It took almost 6 years for him to find the right girl. His weird conditions ensured that his parents had a tough time in searching the right bride for him.

He wanted his life partner to be an accommodating person, somebody with an interest in arts, and most importantly a positive attitude towards life. Good look’s was another important parameter for him and he felt that the only advantage of an arranged marriage was that he had an option to choose his bride by looks.

Prem was quite unlike his name; he has a sad past when it comes to relationships. It wasn’t that he never believed in the concept of love. He is a smart looking fellow with a decent personality. He was in a relationship during his college life; however it didn’t last long. The sad part was that he still has no clue as to why the girl broke up with him. After that incident Prem had few stints of one-sided love but one-sided they were. He used to feel he was jinxed! But at the back of his mind he knew the reason behind is bad luck.

 He had a major problem!!!

All his relationships with girls went beyond the level of friendship but unfortunately the next level would always be that of a brother, yes! All the girls that he had met in life saw him as a brotherly figure.

This trend continued right from his UG days & it has only strengthened over the years. He wasn’t sure if it was his persona or if it was his looks, the girls always saw him as a brother!

He was always surrounded by girls, and that made the other guys jealous of him but none of them knew what he was actually going through. Another disadvantage of the whole situation was that the guys would approach him to get in touch with the girls. And eventually, he became a faithful messenger & mediator to those girls who were once upon a time his crush.  Ironically Rakshabandhan was celebrated like another birthday of his!

His hopes that things would change in professional arena were thrashed because all that girls could see in him was a brotherly figure. And he continued playing the part of a cupid.

He slowly got used to this and stopped worrying about the fact that girls found him ‘harmless & felt comfortable around him’. His dry life however made his parents unhappy, they were worried about him. They were so worried that they took the extreme step of taking him to a psychiatrist to check if there was anything wrong with him.

Today after finding his soul mate he is a finally a happy man. Meenaxi lives in a different city; they have met only once that too on the day when he had gone with his parents to meet her for the first time. He had missed his own engagement as he was out of the country for an onsite project and their parents were in a real hurry to seal the deal.

The engagement marked the beginning of a long distance relationship which excited Prem because he believed in the saying, “distance keeps the heart go fonder.” The two of them started talking to each other regularly. The calls were however always made by Prem as he believed in male chivalry.

It has now been four months & he is head over heels in love with her. He wanted to meet her in their courtship phase but was always discouraged by Meenaxi. Though it disappointed him deep down his heart, he was happy with her shyness. He started enjoying her rejection because he loved her shy avatar and thus he kept asking to meet up. His attempt to get ‘real’ personal with her, were always dodged by her & she would always change the topic and her rejection excited him even more.

Finally, the d-day arrived. Prem was all around the place helping and greeting friends and relatives. He looked restless because wanted to talk to Meenaxi but couldn’t do so because of the huge crowd & the feeling of embarrassment, which kept creeping in. Most of his ‘sisters’ arrived for the wedding and he happily introduced them to Meenaxi.

After wrapping up all the rituals the newly wed couple was all set to retire for the day.

His friends and her brother led them to their room. The room was looking beautiful in the shimmering light of scented candles making the whole atmosphere very romantic. The ambience managed to charge up the already charged up Prem he had no traces of tiredness of the whole day.

As he lowered himself on the couch he requested Meenaxi to sit on the bed, as he wanted her to feel comfortable. He kept watching her and she kept looking down like one of those olden movie heroines in similar first night situations trying to act shy. His initial questions were answered with a ‘mmm’ or a ‘mm mmm’!

He felt she was shy so he went near her and asked, “do you love me?” when Meenaxi remained mum he bent down on his knees, looked into her eyes and repeated the question. “Meenaxi, do you love me?”

She refused to look into his eyes. Prem, now totally impatient, wanted to take control of the situation; he slowly lifted her chin & repeated his question. This time, she was ready with a reply….

“Look Prem, I dunno how and why but whenever we speak or whenever you come near me I get this strange feeling. I feel so comfortable when you are around & I feel I can say anything to you but if you ask me to define what I really feel for you then I can only think of one thing. I see a brother in you!!! I really don’t know what to do and how to handle this, I hope you can help me.”

THE END!!!

    • August 5, 2009 1:39 am

omg… i hope this is ur last attempt at this kind of fiction. i mean with terrible endings like this!! (thats only coz i believe in happy endings only…)

Vim : There are no happy endings in reality my child !!! 😀 😀

my heart goes out to Prem… u heartless beast (the writer in vimmuuu), why did u have to give prem that kind of a beginning to his married life…. that too when he was hoping for it so much??! and i feel like slapping meenaxi… if she thot of him that way then why did she agree to that marriage?? 😛 😛

Vim :beginning to his married life ?? its over. The ‘The End’ at the end is an end to everything 😀 😀 😀

      alright…
      * me straights up after the outburst, looks around, composes herself and clears her throat* ahem!
enuff drama for one comment… lol
the narration is good… the twist in the end is good too 🙂 keep writing more fiction n u’ll get the hang of it better!

Vim: after all that you have read there, you are still asking me to try, huh? Ok, you asked for it !!!

just dont give me a shock like that again… i take some of ur writings too personally so hence diverse reactions 😛 hehe

Vim : LOL, atleast someone is taking me seriously 😀 😀
P.S.: now for the mean comment…! (see? i’m starting to take lessons from u! 😛 ) how much of this is inspired from real life??? 😀

      Vim : Prem is me. I am Prem !!! 😀 😀 😀

      • August 5, 2009 7:49 am

lol I think this is his life story… 😛 Pavam koyandha..

Vim : so, you got it, huh ? 😀

      • August 5, 2009 10:47 am

There are no happy endings in reality
married life is over?? there are no beginnings
man, somebody is taking this really negatively 😛 😛

if u r keeping these kind of expectations/hopes, i dont want to know where u r headed.
hmm but i guess keeping ur expectations low is better than keeping them sky-high and getting disappointed!!

Vim: LOL, anything that is followed by a smiley is supposed to be a joke.

      • August 5, 2009 11:24 am

        Prem is u?? :O:

        Vim :LOL, kinda !!!

  2. August 5, 2009 1:23 am

  10. August 5, 2009 8:20 am

    The eternal brother !

There is a gujju story that way. Feeding on the gujju tendency of calling everyone Ben. A guy got married as a child, when he grew up he went to fetch his bride. On the outskirts of his village, he went to the well and saw a woman there. He said – Can I have a drink of water, Sister? The woman lifted her veil and poured some water for him out of her matka. When he got to his in-laws house, they were thrilled and set him up with his wife in a nice room, after dining and wining him. Alas, when he lifted the veil, he saw it was the same girl he had called Ben at the well. So he couldnt ahem.. you know, his SISTER.

So a few years passed, and the parents grew restless because there was no child. They decided to marry the boy again. When the doli was about to depart, his father-in-law appeared with his hands folded. “Please treat her like you treated your first wife”. Poor guy, He couldnt do unto her what he didnt do to the other one.

    • August 5, 2009 9:46 am

      ROFL.. loved that story!!!!

Well, the anti climax was intentional buddy. You are feeling this way because this is your first visit. I write only such kinda crap and I knows its hi-time the different blog domains took an action against me !!! 😀 😀 😀

OMG… i still can’t stop laughing…. since the begining i knew that its not gonna be another ‘normal couple’ story for sure… (that’s why its a story )… and was guessing that may be she is in love with someone else (too predictable )… may be she is lesbian ( its quite possible these days 😛 ) …. may be she is not shy at all and will shock him by saying something really bold …. may be she is so shy that she just want let him come close to her… and few more… but some how never thought of the word ‘brother’ 😛
    Poor Prem ;D

    • August 6, 2009 3:47 pm

Welcome to V-Lokam and thanks for dropping in your comment !!!

So you knew there was something stupid coming up, huh? 😀 😀 😀 Now, atleast thats predictable !!! That lesbian angle is actually too good. I can imagine Prem walking like Ross (of FRIENDS sitcom) and telling people that his wife is a lesbian and he is not !! 😀 😀 😀

What else can you expect on Rakshabandhan other than a ‘brother’?? 😀 😀 😀 and you are feeling bad for Prem; but I am sure even you will make him your brother 😀 😀

      • August 6, 2009 3:53 pm

Hehehe…sure…would love to meet him 😛

        Vim : Run, Prem, Run !!! 😀 😀 😀

  37. August 6, 2009 2:14 pm

grrr!! i was trying to figure out how to enable ‘Bath tub’ chat!! 😀

jokes apart i was just testing how to add the link to this gravataar thingy.

  38. August 6, 2009 3:53 pm

ROFL ..and what a corny and careful pick of name….”Prem”.. I also knew quite a bunch of those brother figures…but none like “Prem”.. 😀

    • August 6, 2009 4:20 pm

      😀 😀 You knew a few Prems?? or you all created a few Prems??? 😀 😀 😀

      • August 11, 2009 12:20 pm

Such “Prems” get created on their own..with or without effort 😛

And Vims…everybody is demanding a sequel (includes me)..think think think…

      • August 12, 2009 4:17 am

LOL, let me! let me! let me ! 😀 😀 😀

  39. August 6, 2009 9:13 pm

What a sad ending !!!! But I think it suits the story !!!

I am always a lover of happy romantic stories especially with happy endings.

Very gud attempt at ur short story stint. Since, your imaginative head has been at the top after the Cross Border trials, we can expect more from you, of this sort, right ???

    • August 7, 2009 12:07 am

      Sad ??? 😀 😀 😀

Who doesnt like happy endings? but thats not how life treats us, rt? 😉

LOL, its not after the Cross Border trials, I have always been this crazy 😀 😀 😀

  43. August 8, 2009 3:33 pm

Why do I have a feeling that this story reflects your fears? 😛
    Terrible terrible story!
You just ruined that guy’s life! Now write a steamy sequel and make it a romantic happy ending. 😛

    • August 12, 2009 4:25 am

You hit on the right spot, buddy ! This is my worst fear !!!

LOL, I ruined his life??? LOL. He has to find another person if I need to make a happy ending !! 😀 😀 What about hooking him up with her sister??? 😉

  44. August 8, 2009 4:07 pm

Maybe it is like the ‘Yen Na’ type of addressing in the Bhramin community, where the wives call their husbands ‘chellama’ like that!

    Destination Infinity

    • August 12, 2009 4:26 am

      Nahhh, that didnt happen to me..I mean, Prem ! 😀 😀 😀

I think its a very good attempt at writing ‘fiction’ (and fiction it is, I hope). You could do with more tweaking, and restricting the narrative to either past or present tense and not mixing the two. I do feel sorry for the poor guy. How unfair! And how could Meenaxi think of her husband-to-be as a brother? I don’t think that’s possible for any girl.

    • August 12, 2009 4:27 am

LOL, it is supposed to be a combination of facts and fiction ! 😀 😀 Thanks for the suggestions. I really need them !!

Dont worry, it is possible !! I have never been able to understand women ! 😀

  46. August 11, 2009 7:06 pm

wow… what an end…. enjyed readin it … She sees a brotherly figure in him on their first night… lol… cant stop laughing at the poor soul….I had heard about a saying (delete it if it sounds too vulgur to be on a blog) ” Din mai bhaiya raat mai saiyaa” but here even in raat he seems a bhaiya…

Did u say it is ur first attempt??? doesnt look like one… way to go…

Story proves that you are a sadist. 😉 You not only didn’t let poor guy have his own wedding night in peace, but also put a question mark on his future. 😛
